Kilimanjaro Routes & Prices - Choose the Best Route to Climb
We can make it happen for you in a group, a pair or even solo. Our group climbs typically have 4 climbers with a maximum of 8, unless you would like to organise for a larger group climb.
With 6 routes available and all-inclusive land prices, we have the experience, daring and support you'll want with you all the way to the summit and back.
Private or Group Trek
All our treks can be private and we’ll take just your party on a date that suits you. At times we may ask a private party whether they would be willing to have a solo climber or couple join them. This is then your decision as to whether you are comfortable with increasing your group or not.
Some people would like to climb as part of a group. With a group the fee per person will be reduced. The best way to start a group is for a party of one, two or more persons to book a date. Once this date is confirmed, we then advertise the group to others that make enquiries with us. This works really well, as we have a large amount of singles wanting to climb and are always looking for other groups to join. As others join you, your climbing cost will also be reduced.

On Kilimanjaro there are 7 approach routes that we use:
We recommend taking 6 or 7 days (8 days for Lemosho) to complete the route in order for your body to acclimatise with the altitude and give you the best possibility of successfully summiting. |
Route Details, Prices & Itineraries
Machame Route
This route has a high summit success rate as it allows opportunities to 'walk high, sleep low' so you will acclimatise better.
The Machame is the most popular route & can be busy. To overcome this, we start our trek early each morning - usually by 8am. The minimum time to climb Kilimanjaro via this route is 6 days. However, most climbers tend to add an extra day to improve acclimatisation and increase their chances of summiting Uhuru - the final peak. It offers stunning scenery with lots of diversity in the landscape, flora and birds. You will trek through Kilimanjaro's five distinct climatic zones - Cultivation, Montane, Moorland, Alpine Desert & Ice Cap, and experience the expansive views of the Shira Plateau, the Lava Tower, the Great Barranco Wall and Southern Icefield. Like all the routes on Kilimanjaro, the Machame route is physically challenging. This route does have areas of steep descents over rocks and there is a section where you will need to scramble up the Barranco Wall. On one small section you will need to take a large stride around a rock but this is not difficult and you will have the help of your guide. The ascent to the peak starts at midnight at Barafu Camp (4,600m) which is the base camp for the final ascent to Kilimanjaro. We can also start this ascent in the morning if you would prefer. The advantage of a midnight start is you will summit at dawn and your descent will not be as hot as if you were descending in the afternoon. The descent is via the Mweka route. Itineraries: - Machame 7 Day - Machame 6 Day

Lemosho Route
The Lemosho route is one of our favourite routes. Lemosho is highly recommended due to the high success rate and and the fact that it’s a very scenic and mostly unspoilt route where you might see wild game.
It enjoys lower crowds (from days 1 to 3), and then joins up with the Machame route which is considered the most beautiful and scenic of all the routes. This route approaches the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro from the west before travelling around to the south and circling Kibo, the largest of the three volcanoes that make up Mount Kilimanjaro, before arriving at Barafu Camp (Base Camp) the point from where your final summit starts. This trek starts with some long walks as you gain altitude but it also allows you to acclimatise well improving your ability to successfully summit. You’ll enjoy walking through magnificent forests and moorlands and then be fascinated as the path changes and you walk through a high-alpine desert. Your experience will culminate with the excitement and satisfaction of reaching Uhuru Peak, all while viewing the glorious glacial panorama from the highest point in Africa. Northern Circuit Trail
See the unknown side of Kilimanjaro. This is the spectacular route which starts in the west and traverses along the remote North side of Kilimanjaro where you can see down into Kenya and ascend the summits via School Hut (4,720m).
It gives you the best combination of Lemosho and Rongai Routes. It is true wilderness and rarely trekked, if you looking for something different then this is the best choice. Because of the longer duration you get greater acclimatisation. It doesn’t include the Barranco Wall so it's good for trekkers who prefer not to scramble up. This climb can be done in 7 days but it makes a huge difference to acclimatization to take an extra day. Itinerary: -Northern Circuit Trail 8 Day |
PRICE: 8 DAY NORTHERN CIRCUIT:

Rongai Route
The Rongai route starts on the North Eastern side of the mountain and has fewer climbers than most of the other routes.
The drive to the trail has improved over the years with a new tarmac road. This trail can be used at any time of the year, even in the rainy season. On this trek you will may see some animals as the forest is not very thick which means there is always enough food for animals to eat on the ground. On this route you will enjoy the view of the beautiful Mawenzi peak which is the second highest on Kilimanjaro, and also spend a night on it’s base. This route descends via the Marangu route. Umbwe Route
The Umbwe Route, Kilimanjaro is based in the south and is a 5 or 6 day tour.
This is the most challenging route both in terms of terrain & gradientIt also has the highest incidence of altitude sickness and the lowest summit success rate. The steepness and difficulty of ascent on the first two days are what leads to this poor acclimatization. On the 2nd day the route joins with Lemosho and Machame routes at Barranco camp and follows the rest of the Machame route up to the summit. Descent is via the Mweka route. Marangu Route
Marangu route is also known as the "Coca-Cola" route as you can get a Coca-Cola at each hut on the way up Kilimanjaro.
It is the least scenic as the ascent and descent are on the same route. It is the easiest route in terms of walking though it has one of the lowest summit success rates as the Marangu route does not allow for good acclimatisation. Accommodation is in dormitory style huts. The huts have a communal dining room, simple washrooms and toilets - flushable and "long drop". The entry gate is close to Moshi. Being the quickest route up the mountain there is less cost in terms of park fees, food, accommodation, number of porters required etc. This route is 5 days, however, it is highly recommended that an extra day is added to assist acclimatisation and so improve your chances of summiting. Shira Route
Shira was the original route and Lemosho is the improved variation. It starts high in the west at Shira gate and the first section of the trail is not hiked but driven up to 3,500m. Climbers using Shira will miss hiking in the rain forest one of Kilimanjaro's ecological zone.
On the first day on the mountain, you begin your hike at 11,800 feet (3,600 m) and spend the first night at the same elevation at Simba Camp. Then the route merges with Lemosho and follows the southern circuit route. Although Shira is a varied and beautiful route, Lemosho is recommended over Shira due to the high altitude of Shira's starting point. It is possible that climbers will experience altitude related symptoms on the first day due to failed acclimatization. Climbers using Shira should be confident of their ability to acclimatize. Descent is made on the Mweka route. The Shira route via Northern circuit or the Western Breach can also be done. |

Climber to Staff Ratios
In a two person climb our ratio for staff to climbers is: one lead guide, one assistant guide, one cook and a minimum of 11 porters. The number of staff increases as your party increases in size, see the table below.
On summit night, for groups of three (3) or more climbers, we also take experienced porters along with our guides so that we have a 1:1 ratio of staff to climbers. We have read numerous horror stories where climbers have had to terminate their summit attempt because there were insufficient staff, and as members of the team became sick they all had to return to base camp.

Step 2: Decide when to climb
Step 2: Decide When to Climb
When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro can be safely climbed all year round but for the best weather, our clients are advised to climb as close to the middle of June to October or December to March, as their circumstances allow.
For some clients the attraction to climbing during rainy months are that there are virtually no crowds on any routes and there is higher likelihood of snow at the summit. Having said that it can snow at other times.

Make sure you understand Altitude Sickness
Get advice from a Travel Doctor
What is High Altitude?
- We believe you should be aware of altitude sickness (and symptoms) as a danger to your health and in certain circumstances can cause death. Altitude sickness can be common and your guides are trained to recognise and observe for these symptoms.
- We would strongly recommend you discuss the cause and prevention of Altitude Sickness with your Travel Doctor prior to departing your country.
- Most people can ascend to 2,500 metres with little or no effect. Some people commence to display symptoms of altitude sickness after this height.
What is High Altitude?
- High Altitude: 2,500 to 4,000 metres (8,000 to 13,000 feet)
- Very High: 4,000 to 5,500 metres (13,000 to 18,000 feet)
- Extremely High: Over 5,500 metres (Over 18,000 feet)
Vaccinations
Please see your Travel Doctor for advice on vaccinations.
You may be required to have proof of Yellow Fever Vaccination to enter Tanzania. Check this site: Some other Vaccinations that should be considered with your Doctor are as follows:

Malaria
Malaria is an ongoing concern in Tanzania.
- You need to be aware of this concern and take the appropriate preventative measures.
- We recommend seeing your Health Professional/Travel Doctor regarding prevention well before you leave home. Some malaria medications need to be taken days before the trek commences.
- A good insect repellant containing DEET is also recommended to prevent bites.
- As you commence your trek, there are no mosquitoes on the mountain. It is still possible to get malaria before or after the trek or whilst on safari.
- Please be careful. Malaria can be treated, but prevention is the better alternative.
Diarrhoea
Stay well hydrated on your trek.
It is important to keep well hydrated, particularly whilst trekking Kilimanjaro.
If you develop diarrhoea it is important to rehydrate with solutions such as Dioralyte or Hydrolyte. Hydrolyte added to your boiled water (supplied each day of your trek by Majestic Kilimanjaro) is actually very useful for staying hydrated even if you do not suffer from diarrhoea.
You may wish to discuss with your Health Professional taking an antibiotic such as Ciproxin with you in case you get bad diarrhoea. This is a prescription only medicine but may greatly assist in your recovery with diarrhoea.
Preventative measures
Some preventative measures are very important. Suffering from diarrhoea may jeopardise your chances of summiting.
Below are some tips to prevent this potential problem when in Tanzania:

Some preventative measures are very important. Suffering from diarrhoea may jeopardise your chances of summiting.
Below are some tips to prevent this potential problem when in Tanzania:
- Unless you are sure of the water supplies' purity, don't drink it. Remember water can also be contained in ice added to drinks, the washing of salad products and even when cleaning your teeth.
- On your trek with Majestic Kilimanjaro you will be given three (3) litres of boiled water per per person per day.
- If you are uncertain about your water supply, use bottled water which is freely available and inexpensive in Tanzania. Hot tea and coffee, bottled drinks are usually safe. If in doubt, don’t drink it.
- Take precautions with local foods. Eat cooked vegetables and avoid salads that have been prepared with local water supplies.
- Boil un-pasteurised milk before use.
- Cook meats well and eat whilst hot.
Take care with local cheeses and ice cream.
- Be careful of shellfish and fish. They can be harmful even if cooked well.
- Peel all fruits including tomatoes.
- Wash all dishes in clean hot water.
- Wash hands regularly, thoroughly and always before eating. Sanitising gels are recommended and keep some upon you always.
Training for your climb
Good preparation and training for your Kilimanjaro trek will allow you to enjoy the experience and journey, rather than it just being a hard slog.
For most people, the summit of Uhuru Peak is well within reach.
Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro on a regular trekking route requires no climbing with ropes. Your trek involves walking slowly up and down hills for extended periods of time EVERY day. You need to condition yourself for this type of extended walking.
Being physically fit and prepared will give you the best chance at acclimatisation and achieving your goal of standing on top the highest mountain in Africa.

Commence training at least 8 Weeks before
- Try to commence your training programme at least 8 weeks prior to your trek.
- While running, cycling and swimming are all good for your aerobic fitness, the best training for your trek is simply to walk or hike, particularly up and down hills in the bush, woods or trails (not just paved roads).
- Stairs (or the Stair Master at the gym) are also particularly good training for Kilimanjaro. Bush or trail hikes and stairs will simulate your Kilimanjaro trek and allow your leg muscles to gain strength and prepare for these extended trek days.
- If you've never hiked before, you should start with shorter time intervals, a slower pace, and no weight (in your day pack) and then gradually increase all of the above as your fitness level improves.
- Given at least 8 weeks of preparation, your body will have a good chance to gain stamina, strength and fitness.
- Generally, you are conditioning your body to walk for between 4 to 6 hours EVERY day carrying a personal day pack weighing between 7 and 10kg.
Fitness allows your body to function efficiently with less oxygen
General aerobic fitness allows the body to function efficiently with less oxygen and a fit body is more likely to withstand the stress of consecutive days on the mountain.
Fitness will also help your mental attitude
A fit and prepared body will also give you the best defence of mental fatigue when the going gets tough on the mountain. A positive mental attitude is very important for your successful summit.
